The Signal from the Old Pager
Anin was a high school student who loved antique objects. To her, old items were
not merely outdated they carried stories. One afternoon, she and her best
friend, Salsa, visited a small antique shop on the corner of the city. The shop was
narrow, dim, and felt strange the moment they stepped inside.
Behind a glass display, Anin found an old pager and a vintage BlackBerry phone.
When she asked about them, the shop owner an elderly man with a mysterious
gaze only said,
“These objects once held many messages that were never delivered.
”
Without fully understanding his words, Anin bought both items.
That night, the pager and the BlackBerry lay on Anin’s study desk. Both devices
were dead and unusable. Just as Anin was about to fall asleep, suddenly
BEEP.
The pager turned on.
On its screen appeared a short message with a date that made Anin shiver:
April 17, 1994
ARE YOU STILL THERE?
Anin immediately called Salsa. When they brought the pager closer to the
BlackBerry, a bright light burst from both devices. Before they could scream, the
world around them vanished.
When they woke up, they were in a room that looked like Anin’s bedroom but
something was different. There was no laptop, no modern phone. Only cassette
tapes, a radio, and a landline telephone. A calendar on the wall showed the year
1994.
They had traveled to the past.
Days passed. Life in the 1990s felt calmer. There was no internet, no social
media. People talked face to face, waited for messages, and lived at a slower pace.
Salsa loved it.
“I feel more alive here,
” she said one day.
“I don’t want to go back.
”
But Anin began to notice something was wrong. Salsa grew tired more easily, her face
became pale, and her steps weakened as if her body was rejecting a time that was not
meant for her.
The pager started beeping again this time continuously, like a warning.
Anin knew they had to return.
“I can’t lose you,
” Anin said with tears in her eyes.
“But I’m scared to go back,
” Salsa replied.
“I’m afraid of losing myself.
”
Anin realized the pager could send one final message. With trembling hands, she typed:
Every time has its own place.
Do not stay in a time that does not belong to you.
A bright light appeared once more. Salsa tightly held Anin’s hand.
When the light faded, they were back in Anin’s bedroom in the present. The pager and the
BlackBerry shut down forever, as if their task was complete.
Salsa slowly smiled. Her strength had returned.
“You saved me,
” she said softly.
“We saved each other,
” Anin replied.
A few days later, Anin returned to the antique shop. Inside a box of old photographs, she
found a black-and-white photo dated 1994.
In the picture stood two teenage girls in front of the antique shop.
They looked exactly like Anin and Salsa.
Anin swallowed hard. Now she understoods ome messages arrive late, but they are never
truly lost.
Do not be trapped in the past. Everyone has their own time to live and grow. True
friendship means protecting each other, not holding each other back
